Route 125 Mine Subsidence Fix Progressing
Montoursville - Here's an update on the remedial work taking place at that mine subsidence that forced the closure of State Route 125 south of Shamokin in Northumberland County recently.
A PennDOT crew used rock to backfill a substantial portion of the void over the weekend. The backfilling is being monitored to see if any settling occurs. If no settling occurs, tomorrow the crew is scheduled to place 85 cubic yards of concrete atop the large rock. Once the concrete cures, additional backfilling will take place to finish off the project.
Barring any unforeseen issues, PennDOT is optimistic Route 125 can be reopened to traffic by next Tuesday, Oct. 11.
In the meantime, the detour remains in effect.
The mine void that opened up along Route 125 had an opening at the surface of 20 feet and a depth of at least 200 feet. Route 125 was closed to traffic to ensure the public's safety until a fix to stabilize the ground there could be implemented.
